Tattoo Parlour Branding for TCO London & 99 Designs by Vistaprint

We are beyond stoked to share our tattoo parlour branding for TCO London & 99 Designs by Vistaprint. We were honoured to be a featured artist in a street art project reimagining indie businesses across the UK. Creative agency TCO London and graphic design services website 99 Designs by Vistaprint commissioned Ulysses Design Co for the By Design series.

The project aimed to shine a light on the thousands of UK businesses that shut their doors because of Covid 19. With these tragic closures, many shop fronts were left sad and empty. This series aimed to give these high streets a fresh burst of colour by reimagining empty store fronts with fantastical and imagery businesses.

Ulysses Design Co was commissioned to create tattoo parlour branding for Artificial Inktelliegnce in Leeds, UK. A concept tattoo parlour where you use augmented reality to view your tattoo choices before committing to them. This was a dream commission and super fun to work on!

The target audience was young, design conscious, tattoo enthusiasts so we wanted to make the design as authentic as possible. We researched original and traditional US tattoo parlours for inspiration. We were drawn to the vintage, hand painted signage that adorned the tattoo parlours. It seemed the only typography rule was, there are no rules. More is more! We created an augmented reality spin on the classic tattoo parlour slogans to help sell the shop and it’s concept.

We hand drew the tattoo designs with an old school, Sailor Jerry style in mind. The themes we chose for the content was intended to support the idea the brief. Full house of cards, 6 sided dice, a fortune teller, all seeing eye designs all point towards good luck and seeing the future.

The objective was to draw public attention to a forgotten shop front and inspire new business ventures. To achieve this we used bright and vibrant colours reminiscent of traditional tattoos. The bold as brass typography styles and witty call to actions entices the passerby and demands their attention.

The result was a great deal of public attention and splash of colour on an otherwise empty store front.
